Objectives

This assignment asks you to explore definitions and examples of open-source software and proprietary software, together with their licenses.

Minimal knowledge and experience to acquire include the following:

• Definition of FOSS, contrast with proprietary software.
• Definition of copyleft, contrast with copyright.
• Know examples of copyleft and permissive licenses, including MIT, GPL3, Apache, and CC-by-SA.
• Know examples of software used in this class and their licenses: Linux kernel, Apache web server, Docker Engine, Microsoft Teams, Git, Visual Studio Code, VSCodium.

Wikipedia has excellent information on all of the above.
